Guinea Pig
Cavia porcellus
Pocket Pet · Typical weight 0.70–1.20 kg
Clinical context for guinea pig dosing
Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) share rabbits' obligate-hindgut-fermenter biology and the same fatal-dysbiosis risk from oral narrow-spectrum gram-positive antibiotics. They additionally require dietary vitamin C (no endogenous synthesis), which becomes pharmacologically relevant during illness — supplementation is part of supportive care, not optional. Pododermatitis (bumblefoot), respiratory disease (especially Bordetella), and ovarian cysts dominate clinical presentations; reproductive-control pharmacology mirrors the rabbit playbook.
