Mechanism of Action
Directly inhibits viral DNA polymerase and reverse transcriptase by blocking the pyrophosphate binding site. No need for viral kinase activation.
Side effects & warnings
Highly nephrotoxic. Electrolyte disturbances (hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia). Must pre-hydrate. Penile ulceration reported.
