Mechanism of action

Polyether ionophore that transports cations across cell membranes, disrupting ion gradients in coccidia and gram-positive bacteria. In ruminants, improves feed efficiency by altering rumen microbial populations.

Side effects & warnings

HIGHLY TOXIC TO DOGS, HORSES, AND OTHER EQUIDS — even small amounts can be fatal. Cardiac and skeletal muscle necrosis. NO antidote. Keep all livestock feed containing monensin away from horses and dogs.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for cattle may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Why a species-specific page? Monensin pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in cattle — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
