Mechanism of action

Inhibits dihydropteroate synthase in bacterial folate synthesis. Used primarily in food animals and poultry for coccidiosis.

Side effects & warnings

Withdrawal times required in food animals. Crystalluria risk. Adequate water intake essential. May cause blood dyscrasias with prolonged use.

Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for cattle may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.

Why a species-specific page? Sulfamethazine pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in cattle — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
