Mechanism of action
Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Bacteriostatic. Particularly effective against Mycoplasma and E. coli in swine and poultry.
Side effects & warnings
Primarily for swine and poultry. Observe withdrawal periods. May be combined with lincomycin for synergistic effect (Linco-Spectin).
Species-specific contraindications and adverse-reaction reports for cattle may differ from canine / feline reference data — consult the primary citations listed with each rule.
Why a species-specific page? Spectinomycin (Livestock) pharmacokinetics differ across species: dose ranges, intervals, and route preferences are not interchangeable. Cross-extrapolation from canine doses is unsafe in cattle — the rules above are the citations specific to this species, not generic recommendations.
